I Will Forever Crush On Bettie Page

December 11, 2008

For as long as I can remember I have been enamored with Bettie Page — like so many others. The impact that the sultry, yet sweet, Miss Page made on the world as a pin-up phenomenon cannot be denied. Perhaps it was her seclusive nature over the past half century that added to the mystique of the raven banged beauty. Regardless, she raised “cheesecake” to a bona fide art form with a mixture of innocence and flirtation.

According to her Obituary Press Release posted on the official Bettie Page web site

Los Angeles, December 11, 2008 – Bettie Page, sweet-smiling legendary 1950s pin-up queen with the killer curves and coal-black bangs, died today of pneumonia at a Los Angeles area hospital. She was 85 years old. She suffered a heart attack one week ago and never regained consciousness. Her popularity as an underground, guilty pleasures phenomenon has continued to soar despite the fact that the reclusive Page disappeared almost a half century ago, leading many to believe that one of the most photographed individuals of the 20th century was already dead.

I can honestly say that Bettie Page served as one of my muses on many occasions. Often when writing female characters, especially strong-willed and sultry femme fatales, I would often imagine Bettie Page in the role of the character. While her hair might be a different color and style the character of Alpha Bettie was created with the pin-up queen in mind — right down to her name.

Hopefully, someday artist and Alpha Bettie co-creator Chris Noeth and I will be able to share the adventures of Bettie Swift of Alpha Squadron with the world. And, when we do it will surly be dedicated to the muse, Bettie Page.

Thank you, Bettie. Gone, but not forgotten.

Flirting With Bettie

October 12, 2007

For awhile now, artist Chris Noeth and I have been flirting with a comic book project that we call Alpha Bettie. The year is 2053. Lieutenant Bettie Swift is an officer and fighter pilot with the United Solar Fleet serving aboard the U.S.S. Patriot. She is a member of the Alpha Squad (hence the name Alpha Bettie). She’s a firecracer, but an ace fighter pilot.

I’m not sure when Alpha Bettie will finally launch (and with who the project will launch with), but I just couldn’t keep Chris’ great pages tucked away on my hard drive any longer and not share. So, I’m offering a five page sneak peek of our sci-fi work in progress — just click on the above image for larger view. I absolutely dig that first page with the Patriot soaring toward the reader, while other spacecrafts fly off in the opposite direction.

GeekPunk Update

September 18, 2007

Alright… I spent much of today working on the new GeekPunk.com web site. Not much there yet, but if you click on it you’ll get an idea of what it’ll look like. I was wrestling with little tweaks and fixes trying to make it look consistent with various browsers — ugh.

Also on the GeekPunk front, I’ve been working and formatting a couple of Hero Happy Hour comics that we’re looking to revise and reprint like the Hero Happy Hour Super Special 2004 with bonus material — some that has appeared in other Hero Happy Hour issues and some completely new.

I also got caught up checking in with various artists that I haven’t talked to in awhile. Once the ideas start swapping back and forth it’s easy to lose track of time. But hopefully there’s some Alpha Bettie news just around the corner as I chatted up with artist Chris Noeth today. And I already want to spill the beans on a couple of other things in the very early stages I discussed with him, but it’s way too soon.

Nifty, although maybe somewhat cryptic, announcement tomorrow in honor of Talk Like A Pirate Day. Stay tuned.

Alpha Bettie Is Still Flying

January 10, 2007

I thought I’d post a note that while I am working on a new project (which I’ve been hinting about) work is continuing on Alpha Bettie. Artist Chris Noeth is churning out the pages for the first issue and he’s about wrapped up on the pencils and they’re looking great. I hope to have some solid good news on this title soon. Stay tuned.
