Eight To Anticipate In August (Well, Half Anyway)

(Ugh. Apparently the entire post didn’t make it up the first time. Let’s try again.)

We’re going to kick off the month of June by looking at what to anticipate as far as the comic book direct market goes for the month of August. Flipping through the pages of the June Previews catalog (Vol. XVIII, #6) here’s what I’m looking to get my grubby paws on…

Guerillas #1 (Image) – As the Vietnam War continues to drag on, the U.S. decides to implement their new secret weapon… Monkeys! GUERILLAS is the first issue of an action-packed miniseries which follows a troop of specially trained chimpanzees and the lone human soldier brought along for the ride.

Another concept to file in the “Damn, why didn’t I think of that catagory?” category. This looks like an interesting concept to follow, but for nine issues? Anyways, who doesn’t like monkeys? Now, before I get a barrage of emails and comments below — I am well aware that chimpanzees are not monkeys. While monkeys and apes have always been popular in comic books, there definitely seems to be a trend that their on popularity is on the rise. This gives me hope for my monkey idea for a mini comic book series. I’ll be checking this one out for sure.

Flash Gordon #1 – America’s beloved sci-fi hero is back in a brand new ongoing series, based on Alex Raymond’s original ideas but with a modernized twist for the 21st century! CIA Agent Dale Arden draws a reluctant Flash Gordon back into the world of espionage to track down the allegedly insane Hans Zarkov – who’s been accused of creating a weapon of mass destruction. Elsewhere in the universe, Ming the “Merciful’s” tyrannical shadow looms over Mongo, where an impending civil war is escalating!

Flash Gordon is one of my all-time favorite characters. But, let’s admit it — the various incarnations of Flash Gordon over the last 70 plus years. Well, the latest incarnation of Arrdden Entertainment looks right up my alley. This looks like the Flash Gordon that I’ve been waiting for with the exact art style that I completely dig. I’m definitely on board for this one.

Welcome to Hoxford #1 (IDW) – In the debut issue of Welcome to Hoxford, Raymond Delgado isn’t welcome at all. Rather, he’s the newest inmate at the Hoxford Correctional Facility and Mental Institution. He has no hope of release, parole, rehabilitation, or decent conversation. On a good day, he’ll tell you he’s Zeus and only bite your arm off. Literally. On a bad day, you won’t have time to scream to the prison guard for help. But Dr Jessica Ainley, his doctor for five years wants to help Ray and can’t understand why the newly privatized, corporately run prison, won’t give her access to her patients. And why are people always transferred into Hoxford, but no records show anyone ever transferring back out…?

IDW publishing a werewolf series? Leave it to Templesmith to get it done. I’ll rip my claws into this one. (Sorry.)

Galaxy Quest #1 (IDW) – The first-ever Galaxy Quest comic book tale! It’s been 20 years since the cast of Galaxy Quest ruled the airwaves! (Alas, the intervening decades involved lots of sci fi conventions and retail store grand openings and precious few acting jobs!) Now, on the eve of the relaunch of America’s most beloved science fiction series, Galaxy Quest: The Journey Continues, a world-threatening crisis occurs! Will the Earth survive? Mmmmaybe, if Jason Nesmith and his fellow actors-turned-adventurers have anything to say about it! In the immortal words of his alter ego, Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, “Never give up! Never surrender!”

I always thought that the premise of Galaxy Quest was a worthwhile concept to pursue in comics. Though, while this comic series appears to follow the same route as the movie — following the antics of the actors that play the characters from the fictional television show Galaxy Quest — I always thought that doing comic books based on the fictional show itself was the way to go. Perhaps if this series does well enough the other option may be… well, an option.

Fifth on my list to anticipate in the month of August is…

I guess that’s it — only four new titles in August are really peaking my interest above and beyond the regular comics and books that I look forward to month after month. But, I’ve got a feeling that September will have an interesting title or two to that I’ll greatly be anticipating. Stay tuned.

Can I ask though – how did you get this picked up and into google news?

Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created?

Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..
