Jan Flix

Since one of my resolutions for the new year is to see more movies, especially in the theaters, I’m going to do a little more research and a little more planning when it comes to my cinematic choices. The first month of 2008 looks as if it is going to be a light month with not a whole lot coming out to entice me to return to the cineplex — perhaps providing me an opportunity to catch up on a few movies that came out during the tail-end of ’07.

ra_cloverfield_teaser2.jpgCloverfield (Jan 18) — A going-away party thrown by a group of young New Yorkers is interrupted by the arrival of a skyscraper-sized monster that descends upon the city. The events are chronicled with their video camera that serves as a document of their attempts to survive the horrifying ordeal.

Alright, besides the fact that I’m thinking that there is going to be a teaser for the J.J. Abrams‘ (Cloverfield producer) Star Trek (albeit brief, I’m sure) this looks like it has the potential to be a fun and even scary movie. Although I wasn’t overly impressed with the “documentary during the heat of the action” approach with The Blair Witch Project I think Cloverfield has a better chance of utilizing this approach to its fullest potential. I’ll probably see this one alone — my girlfriend has already taken a pass.

ra_rambo_poster.jpgRambo (Jan 25) — John Rambo has “retired” to the northern Thailand jungles to live a solitary and peaceful life. Human rights missionaries search him out to serve as a guide into Burma to deliver medical supplies. When the missionaries are captured by the Burmese army, Rambo’s “retirement” is cut short and he ventures into the war zone to rescue them.

Everyone has seen the trailer online — the bloody, gory, violent tailer. And while I think that it might be fun to experience the movie with a theater packed full with an audience hellbent and cheering for Rambo to kick ass, I’m thinking that I might hold out for the much gorier, bloodier, and ultra-violent uncut edition to come out on DVD — and enjoy the carnage in the comfort of my own home.

So, at this point in the game I feel rather confident that I’ll get out and see the one January film that I really want to see — Cloverfield. Though, I am somewhat intrigued by Rambo, I think it can wait.

Probable and possible Feb flix — Jumper and Diary of the Dead.
